Remember the original Doom game, for DOS? It was one of those gory shoot-everything-in-sight games, but it was one of the first (known to my college’s CS department’s lab assistants, anyway) real-time multiplayer network games, so it seemed new and fun at the time.
I remember one time, a fellow lab assistant I’ll identify as Jade tried running Doom on his Linux box. (I don’t remember if he was running a native Linux version of Doom or if he was running the DOS version using dosemu.)
At any rate, Doom was really hogging resources on his PC, so at the shell prompt he tried
…but the system just hung!
